I don’t know if this is in turn a scam, or what, but it sucks when a person’s car (particularly a car like this) is held hostage so I figure post this here and maybe someone can figure out or do something.

Trips all sorts of red flags for me. Can’t particularly say why, but it just seems suspicious.

I just did a little research and couldn’t find anything in the way of complaints against the business. Sounds like either an isolated issue or a scam.

It is very, very unlikely for a woman to refer to herself as “a female”.
The ad about a scam is probably a scam. Any rational person would just get the car back (either with or without a lawyer) and file a claim in court.

People are stupid. Everyday in this Facebook group I'm in there's people asking someone to run plates for them. Like, what are you going to do with that info? Just yesterday a woman wanted plates ran because someone was driving like an asshole but didn't do any damage to her car. I asked her who the real asshole in this scenario is?

Phishing for a knight in shining armour, I believe.
That said, I have known a ‘Classic Restoration’ shop who took big chunks of money up front, did no work, and then filed for bankruptcy only to open a new premises 10 miles away and start the same process. A lot of people were hurting over their much loved classics being left in worse condition than when they gave it to them. It all came to a head when a V12 E-Type was ‘being returned to the customer’, but was then traced and found inside a lock-up belonging to the garage owner.
My post about the thieving bastard.

Yup, the self-referring as ‘female’ is always a dead giveaway.

All but one were traced, with all but the owner of the SL accepting their vehicle back. The SL owner was so devastated that he didn’t want to see the car in the state it was in (we had sent him pictures), and subsequently sent his son along with the v5 to sell it for £1k flat to a pre-arranged party. Truly depressing.
The owner of the Red Ghia was the person we couldn’t find, knowing only that it was a guy from Holland. We left signs up on the old premises for 8 months before the leaseholder had a new client. The Ghia was moved to a well regarded classic car place about 2 miles away and is still in storage. The leaseholder of the property has the contact details of the storage location just in case Mr Dutchman turns up out of the blue, and that’s pretty much all we can do.

I can see what you’re saying. “Female” is a rather formal word.
But to be fair, people tend to use formal words more than they usually do when there’s a legal battle involved. Instead of “they took my stuff”, one might say “I’m a victim of theft .” So the use of “female” doesn’t necessarily raise a red flag IMO.
At any rate, there are a lot of details left out of the story. She really should talk to a lawyer.

Call a lawyer.

Go read or talk to a few of the peeps at Jezebel. It’s not formal; calling a woman “a female" is borderline derogatory.

Yes there are restoration shops that scam people but I’m a little suspicious here. The picture of the car- it looks already restored. Did she get the car and still owes money? Can’t figure out how to call a lawyer? Obviously this person(assuming real) has money (cost of car + upfront money + unlikely a DD) but can’t afford to sue? This story has way too much hair on it for me not to think it’s a scam. Anyone want to help out this little damsel in distress with the wicked cool car?

I absolutely agree, see my first sentence! Also that pic is from a Barrett Jackson auction from 2015. Fun fact: It sold for $123,200.

Dear God, Man! What are you suggesting? Why would you send someone to converse with those who comment on Jezebel. It’ll only end badly.
